Kokomo Launched

KokomoLaunch.jpg

KokomoMast.jpgThe 58.4-metre KOKOMO was launched at the end of MCM’s 21st year in business. Designed by Dubois Naval Architects with interior by Redman Whiteley Dixon, she is set to be delivered by Alloy Yachts in late February 2010 – in time for her owners to watch the Louis Vuitton Trophy (9-21 March).

MCM founding partner, Peter Wilson says: “It was very exciting to see this, our largest yacht to date, roll gracefully down the slipway and be launched in Henderson and then to make her way to deeper waters on the Auckland waterfront for commissioning. Not only is this the largest launch for MCM to date but also for Dubois, Alloy, Southern Spars and Doyle Sails NZ.”

A number of other MCM new-builds, power and sail, are in progress due for launch between 2010 and 2012. One new order for a motor yacht of around 40 metres has just been placed – with MCM acting for her owner, initially in the yard selection process. Further details to be announced shortly.

Meanwhile the yacht management division, with offices in Newport, RI,
and Palma de Mallorca, adds boats to its fleet including ARTEMIS (ex SALPERTON). The previous (52m) KOKOMO’s new owner – who has named her KONKORDIA – has also selected MCM to manage her.

MCM has managed the construction of over 60 large yachts.

The MCM Advocate 21st anniversary edition published:
Monaco Yacht Show

The third and latest edition is hot off the press and winging its way to clients and media around the globe as the MYS draws to a close and preparations begin for Fort Lauderdale.
Opening with a market overview by MCM founding partners, Nigel Ingram and Peter Wilson – who also provides a diary of a typical day ‘on site’ managing a new construction on the back cover – an impressive list of milestone projects since 1988 shows the depth of MCM’s expertise and experience (America’s Cup winner to Superyachts).
Significant recent launches, managed by MCM, include the motorsailer / explorer yacht Hortense and classic-style sailing yacht Atalante. Ongoing new builds include the J Boat Lionheart, a 55m sistership to Adèle, the 43m motor yacht CII and the new 45m Paraiso soon to start at Alloy Yachts. The new Dubois designed Kokomo with an RWD interior is to launch at Alloy Yachts imminently – in December 2009 at the same time as the Dubois 45m sloop with a Rhoades Young interior Lady B will launch on the other side of the world at Vitters Shipyard.
Images (including a snapshot of Peter and Nigel, when racing professionals aboard Maxis 31 years ago) and news plus updates from MCM’s Yacht Operations Management (a growing activity) in Newport and Palma provide compelling reading, all complemented by a report on MCM over its 21 years in business.
MCM has managed the construction of over 60 large yachts both sail and power.

Superyacht Sailing in Sardinia

MCM's two founding partners sailed together on board Kokomo in Sardinia for both the Dubois Cup and the Loro Piana/Boat International Superyacht Regatta. Nigel Ingram was navigator and Peter Wilson the sail trimmer. Wilson describes the events:

"Six magnificent days of racing off the Costa Smeralda again confirmed what we already knew - of all the possible regatta venues in the world, Costa Smeralda remains at or close to the very top of the list!

The Dubois Cup, even though with just four boats racing (Kokomo, Ganesha, Moonbird and Nashira II) provided some excellent sailing for all. The prize giving at the YCCS was a night to remember with an elegant ceremony emceed by Ed Dubois, followed by a great musical performance by the band members of Dire Straits. That night (and the regatta itself) was also a fundraiser for Spark, which is a charity focusing on raising money for paediatric medicine and in particular, cancer research. I sincerely hope that the event was as successful in this mission as it was in every other way. All-in-all a wonderfully intimate regatta that coupled great racing with many opportunities for the owners and guests to get together for a post-race Campari to exchange war stories.

Following on a day later, the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta was a toughly contested battle that ultimately had the Briand/Huisman Gliss being crowned the winner. On board the 52m Kokomo we had some extremely close racing against the Tripp/Wally carbon fibre Saudade, often sailing within a boat length of one another all day long. The spectacle of crossing tacks with the likes of the classic schooner Meteor one minute and with the Wally sleds the next was really quite something. It is still amazing to see owner Lang Walker pushing Kokomo in much the same way was he does his Farr 40 race boat!  As navigator, Nigel certainly had his work cut out for him. Sailing around at 16 knots through rock strewn channels, some of which were rounding marks on a boat that draws almost 5 metres kept him on his toes, and on a couple of occasions, with an elevated heart rate! For Peter, trimming the 1,800 square metre spinnaker on the enormous aft deck winches in 25 to 30 knots of wind also necessitated total concentration and dexterity. He was pleased to end the regatta in one piece. The perfect sailing conditions for both regattas ranging from 5 to 10 knots all the way up to 35 knots of wind could not have been better even if one could have placed an order. We keenly look forward to participating on another MCM yacht in next year’s events."

Erica XII launched

erica2.jpg

We were lucky with cold but mostly fine weather yesterday and at the end of a long day Erica was in the water, mast in and boom on. The wind tended to increase with rain/sleet squalls as the day went on and gave some problems with getting the mast set but the riggers did a great job and when we were finished the rigging was all hooked up and well on the way to being tuned; lengths all looked good. It was too dark by the time we finished for more photos but I hope that the attached pictures give a taste of an exciting and successful day. Most importantly the boat floats very nicely, on her lines both fore & aft and athwartships and with plenty of bottom paint showing all round. On Monday the freeboard measurements will be taken and the final 6 tonnes of ballast will be installed according to the results. We incline later this week with ABS and MCA surveyors present.

Erica XII on the move

erica.jpg

A cold grey morning but Erica on the move anyway. Today she will be loaded on the barge (rig is already on) and tomorrow at 0730 departs for her proper environment. All looks great.

At the end of yesterday, Thursday, all loaded up and ready to move. Snow passed during the night so Erica will be on the move today.
Best regards, Nigel

‘MCM YACHTS’ WIN TWO SUPERYACHT AWARDS
IN MCM’s 20th year of Construction Management.

kealoha.jpg

KEALOHA (above), the Claasen Jachtbouw/Hoek 27.5m sloop and NIRVANA (below), the Vitters/Dubois/GCA 53.5m ketch (and Monaco Yacht Show winner of the “Prix du Design”), both won their categories at the International Superyacht Awards during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. MCM were Construction Managers for KEALOHA and partially for NIRVANA, as well as two other nominees, RED DRAGON (52m Dubois) and ANGEL (25.4m Langan).

Nigel Ingram who oversaw both projects in The Netherlands says “It is quite a challenge to produce a relatively small volume, classically styled yacht such as KEALOHA, including all of the interior and systems features that are expected of today’s Superyachts while maintaining truly sparkling performance under sail. Congratulations to the Hoek/Claasen team for achieving this. The technical set up of NIRVANA was one of our most challenging projects to date with many new extraordinary features incorporated in this high volume, shallow draft hull form. Again congratulations to the Vitters/Dubois teams on this magnificent yacht and to GCA for her truly remarkable modern, interior”.

With over 60 yachts behind them in 20 years in business, the majority sailing yachts, Nigel Ingram and Peter Wilson, MCM’s founding directors are recognised in the industry by owners, designers, builders and captains as the ‘heavyweights’ who really know the business inside-out and add value to new build projects and ongoing operations management.

Two MCM new-build projects, motor and sail, will launch in 2009 and a further four in 2010.

For feature ideas or an interview please contact Nick Jeffery.
Details of the MCM new builds will be released soon.

A Huge Week for MCM in New Zealand

angel2.jpg

On Wednesday Peter Wilson watched the 84’ Langan designed Angel (left) being launched by Yachting Developments in Hobsonville. She then motored down the harbour to have the mast stepped before returning to the dock at the yard for final tweaking. She has been 18 months in the making, and Wednesday marked a significant project milestone.
reddragon_tow.jpg

peter&owner2.jpg

No sooner had Peter watched Angel come to life when on Thursday, Alloy Yachts slipped Red Dragon (above) into the waterway in front of the yard and two tugs carefully shepherded her down the channel to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. Next week, her mast will be stepped and sails hoisted for the first time. At completion this will have been a 24 month construction process that Peter and the team at MCM have nurtured since inception on the drawing boards of Dubois Naval Architects back in 2005.

From now until February, the finishing touches of each yacht will be thoroughly checked by Peter and the yards' teams. Both yachts will undergo sailing, motoring and anchoring trials over the coming weeks, to ensure that all the systems are running perfectly before the key is ready to be handed over to the proud owners.
