Ganesha is dominant Dubois
David Glenn Yachting World, 14 June 2007
Ganesha (ex-Zulu), the 38.9m sloop built by Fitzroy Yachts in 2005 leads the inaugural Dubois Cup after two races. Conditions in the Bay of Palma couldn't have been better for the seven yachts which completed two 12-mile pursuit races in winds which averaged around 12 knots. The Alloy Yachts built Kokomo of London is currently in 2nd with another Fitzroy Yachts build, Midnight, in 3rd.
The breeze favoured the 'lighter' boats in the fleet, by which I mean the sub-200 tonners. The first three yachts displace 185 tons, 182 tons and 164 tons respectively but aboard Lang and Sue Walker's 51.7m Alloy Yachts-built sloop we not only had to contend with a displacement of almost 400 tons but your author was one of more than 50 crew and guests aboard! Extraordinarily the yacht didn't seem that crowded with guests mingling on the flying bridge, the aft deck, the deck saloon and vast expanses of foredeck.
When I arrived onboard I was very politely told I was wearing 'the wrong trousers'. Blue shorts were the order of the day and I had inadvertently turned up in khaki. I was immediately forgiven then asked to pull on a nifty Kokomo race shirt which had us all looking like America's Cup heavies...
There was a phenomenal brains trust onboard with Lang Walker sharing the helm with Malcolm McKeon from the Dubois office,
Peter Wilson from Marine Construction Management, skipper Adam Painter and North Sails man from Auckland, Paul 'Casper' Murray.
One of the advantages of yachts weighing over 300 tons is that they have to be fitted with AIS (automatic identification systems) so checking out the opposition on screen was a fun pastime in the absence of any ropes to pull - actually I did help retrieve the asymmetric sock, but that was about it. AIS gives a yacht's heading, speed, track etc and is a very useful way of observing the progress of the fleet - for a chasing boat it's a rather handy tool.
We were scratch boat for this regatta and as such started last in the pursuit sequence. By the finish of both races it was clear that the system was working fairly well and if we hadn't put a twist in the A sail on the first hoist and if we'd gone through the gybes problem-free we would certainly have been a couple of places better off.
The fleet was down on numbers partly because Barry Houghton's new Salperton, on her way from Alloy in New Zealand, was battling fierce weather in the Red Sea. Combined with a pit stop earlier in the trip she simply couldn't make it so Barry was aboard Kokomo with a number of other present and future owners of Dubois designed yachts, all of whom were able to compare notes. Barry's on his fourth Salperton and can't wait for the new one to arrive.
Also onboard was UK property developer and sailor 'Hutch' Hutchinson who had just completed a global circumnavigation in his Jeanneau 46. He too had a Red Sea story to tell. As they were sailing north he and his wife were approached by a boat-load of suspicious-looking individuals clearly intent on boarding them. He described how, just as he thought they would try to board, another yacht hove into view and their very unwelcome guests thought better of it - it was a close shave.
Superyacht regattas like this are about fun racing - but often the conversation on board is as riveting as the competition. On both counts the Walkers, Kokomo and their guests served us very well. The Dubois Cup ends tomorrow after two more races.

Adèle shines at Superyacht Society Awards
Adèle has received her third major award: the International Superyacht Society Award for Best Sailing Yacht over 36m.
This follows her success earlier this year at the Showboats Awards in Monaco and receiving the Boat International Sailing Yacht Performance Award in Venice.
“The fact that Adèle has won three prestigious awards is testament to the Owner, builder, designer and all involved,” says project manager Nigel Ingram of MCM.
“The Hoek Design team and Vitters Shipyard did a tremendous job on this project and the yacht has met her Owner’s requirements in every way. Adèle is now in New Zealand having logged close to 40,000 trouble free miles in her first year of service, mostly with the Owner on board. As the Owner’s representatives, we are very proud of this achievement.”
Delivered in June 2005 Adèle is a 54m (180’) ketch designed for worldwide cruising. She has classic lines with long overhangs, and is built to the highest standard in every regard.
MCM has been involved with Adèle for four years, from the drawing board through commissioning. She continues under the company’s operational management through their Yacht Management division.
Based in Newport Rhode Island, MCM was founded in 1988 by partners Peter Wilson and Nigel Ingram. They specialise in representing Owners throughout the design, construction and commissioning of large sailing and motor yachts. Recent projects include Kokomo, the 52m sloop just launched at Alloy Yachts, and Paraiso, which won the International Superyacht Society ‘Best Sailing Yacht' Award in the 23-36m category earlier this year.

Construction of latest superyacht - smooth sailing for MCM team
The design and build process of the recently launched Kokomo was managed by MCM, a company that specialises in representing owners throughout the design, construction and commissioning large sailing and motor yachts.
“It was clear that Kokomo was going to be a magnificent looking yacht right from the preliminary design stage”, says MCM partner Peter Wilson “Having previously worked with both Dubois Naval Architects and Alloy Yachts the owner was keen to reassemble that team, and then brought MCM onboard to take on the overall project management role. Kokomo sails beautifully and represents a tremendous accomplishment that we can all be very proud of.”
Wilson explains that MCM oversaw the project from conception through to commissioning on behalf of the owner. The company has also been awarded the operational management of the yacht, and will add Kokomo to their growing Yacht Management portfolio which includes Adèle, Paraiso and Cassiopeia.
In addition to the 52m Kokomo, the MCM team also has Red Dragon which is a sister-ship under construction at Alloy Yachts, as well as the 52.5m Boreas project at Vitters Shipyard in the Netherlands, amongst other current projects.

Adèle Wins ShowBoats Award
MCM congratulates the team behind Adèle for their triumph at the 2006 ShowBoats Awards.
A very special boat, Adèle was awarded the titl of Best sailing Yacth Over 40 metres at the 2006 ShowBoats Awards in Monaco .
Launched in June 2005, and described as one of the largest and most impressive ketches ever built, the 54.64m (180') ketch also received the Boat International Sailing Yacht Performance Award in April of this year.
The ShowBoat Awards, which seek to recognise the best of innovation, technology and diversity that characterises modern design, engineering and construction of luxury yachts, were presented at a ceremony in Monaco on 23rd June.
MCM has been involved with Adèle for four years, from drawing board to commissioning. The boat, which is owned by Jan-Eric Österlund, was designed by Andre Hoek, and built by Vitters Shipyard in Holland .
“Adèle was designed to accommodate the owner's desire for adventure cruising,” says project manager Nigel Ingram of MCM. “She offers both speed and comfort, maximizing power from a contemporary rig plan and large sail area both upwind and downwind, with narrow beam, relatively low freeboard, and exceptional quality of build and finish.”
Based in Newport Rhode Island , MCM specialises in representing boat owners throughout the design, construction and commissioning of large sailing yachts and motoryachts. The business was founded in 1988 by Peter Wilson and Nigel Ingram. Recent projects include Kokomo , the 52m sloop currently under construction at Alloy Yachts, and Paraiso, which won the International Superyacht Society ‘Best Sailing Yacht' Award in the 23-36m category earlier this year.

Adèle Wins Boat International Award
Nigel Ingram was in Venice last night to witness the 55m (180') Andre Hoek Designed Ketch Adèle receiving the Boat International Sailing Yacht Performance Award - and to enjoy the festivities!
The powerful image of her roaring around Palma Bay during the Elvstrom Superyacht Regatta in Mallorca - showing just why she was the recipient of this prestigious award. Nigel Ingram, Peter Wilson and Andy McNab of MCM, were all on board for this terrific event last autumn.
Congratulations to Andre Hoek for designing such a swift and beautiful yacht.

Paraiso Wins Superyacht Award!
We are thirlled to announce that Paraiso has been recognised by the Superyacht Society as the best sailing yacht in her category. This elegant modern classic has a beautifully crafted raised and fielded panel walnut interior, a high volume hull form which displays exceptional cruising performance. This symbolises a great collaboration between the Owners, the designer and the builder. We are extremely proud of the part we played in securing this seccess, and the regognition of the international panel of judges.
Congratulations to the Owner, Fontaine Design Group and Alloy Yachts.

52m Kokomo progress
Things are happening at pace at Alloy Yachts - as you might expect with roughly 200 tradesmen and boat builders working on the project!
The results of the painstaking design and decision making processes are now clearly evident in the interior design and detailing. The owners are extremely pleased with what they now get to see in three dimensions rather than on a sheet of paper…
The cabins are about to be varnished and the electrical and mechanical systems are roaring along.
Everything is looking very good for a July launch.

Nirvana 53m at Vitters
The 53 meter Dubois designed ketch that Vitters Shipyard are building, is in the fabrication stage at present. It's tough to get far enough away to get an overall view, but here are a couple of snapshots of what is going to be a fantastic yacht.
The shallower fixed draft requirement has necessitated a beamier yacht that would perhaps be typical from Dubois Naval Architects. When the hull form was tank tested, Ed Dubois was very pleased with the performance results. We look forward to seeing how close to the predicted performance she achieves in a full scale test during sailing trials in a couple of years.

37m That's It
The 36.9m (121') Dixon designed high performance sloop is progressing very well indeed at HJB (Holland Jachtbouw).
The hull has had its first “proof coat” of paint and the very clean and handsome interior is well advanced and being installed with great care and attention.
The Marten Spars rig was recently delivered in good time for stepping in late winter/early spring.

Adèle - Fulfilling the mission
After a fabulous Christening celebration, Adèle has been cruising in Norway and Sweden (Sognfjord, Lofoten and Svalbard). She is currently on her way down the Portuguese coast, en route for Palma Mallorca, where she will participate in the Superyacht Cup Regatta in October.

Adèle is launched - rigs in
Adèle is in the water.
Adèle was moved out of the shed at Vitters Shipyard on April 20th, and a couple of days later, barged down the canal, launched and rigs stepped. A very impressive feat!
Once the details of the rigs have been sorted out and the sails bent on, she will undergo sailing trials. Now those pictures will be fun to post!
April 10 2005
Adèle is virtually completed
I don't think there are too many words required to accompany the magnificent images of the 55m (180') ADÈLE project that were taken at the completion celebration at Vitters Shipyard in Holland on April 2nd …
The Hoek Designed (Frans Moerbeek) raised and fielded panel mahogany interior has been magnificently crafted, and I think it's fair to say that there is hardly a piece of wood that is not curved on at least one axis throughout the entire boat!
Nigel Ingram has advised that ADÈLE will be moved from the shed at Vitters in a week or so and then go through the commissioning process prior to sea trials and her maiden voyage up to Spitzbergen in the Arctic Circle .
We shall post images of the launch, mast stepping and sailing trials as they become available. She will certainly be a sight to behold!

Peter Wilson speaks at Yacht Vision '05
Peter Wilson was invited by the organizing body of YACHT VISION '05, to the Design Symposium in Auckland New Zealand on March 12th, to speak on the topic of "The Project Manager's Role" in today's super yacht projects. In addition to Peter, the speakers included the legendary Olin Stephens as well as Ed Dubois (Dubois Naval architects), Michael Peters (Michael Peters Yacht Design) and Michael Breman (Lurssen Shipyards).
The theme of the symposium was:
Forecasting our industry
Linking the theme of Future Vision we attempt to anticipate the fate of the Super-Yacht industry, in all areas from technology to spending habits.
Sector trends now and into the future
We will look at current trends within individual sectors and the way in which they are moving and interacting to gain an insight into their future status.
Macro drivers of our industry
We aim to look at macro drivers that have any impact, positive or negative, on the performance of our industry. Subsequently we examine the ways in which we can minimize negative effects and can capitalize on advantageous factors, which have a potential impact on the industry. The invaluable contributions of international industry leaders and world economists will help set the scene, inform and provide a multi-faceted approach to the varying sectors of the sailing world, allowing each and every person to take away with them, a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the issues and factors that drive the industry.
Analysis and discussion
We aim to engage in intensive analysis and discussion to get a global view of the industry. We encourage speakers from various countries and industry sectors to give their views and provide expert knowledge for a well-rounded analysis and insight into the Super Yacht industry.
The speech was well received and focused on all aspects of Project Management and Yacht Management. It was accompanied by a slide presentation of yachts, as well as images taken during his voyage to South Georgia Island in 2003.
In addition to the serious stuff, there were many delightful social events as well as a regatta using a fleet of Farr designed MRX's. Peter was selected as skipper of one of the boats and finished a creditable 3rd, narrowly beating Ed Dubois.
We are looking forward to Yacht Vision '08!
